When we were in Maui, Nelson, Austin, Sarah and I learned to longboard. I can't say we are pros, but we did take a 2 hour lesson together, had fun and successfully each got up for our brief moments of glory!
A few of the things we learned:
- my sister Sarah's actually pretty good at it...arguably the best in the fam
- surfing is exhausting! 2 hours was plenty!
- if you lay on the board to relax in between turns, the back of your legs will burn, and if you are lucky you will have a really cool line from the ankle strap attached to the board
- I need to work on my arm muscles - paddling was harder than I thought!
- it's always nice to have a cheering section trying like crazy to capture the moment with pictures from the shore - thanks Lauren!
- it's humbling to get showed up by the locals...when they are like 7 years old and flying past you
- the lake and the ocean are entirely different and being a good skier does nothing to prepare you for surfing
- the long sleeve surf shirts they give you that smell like booty from all the other tourists who have worn them without a good washing I'm sure are actually incredibly necessary
At the end of the day we could crawl in bed and call ourselves surfers...in the very loosest of terms...but nonetheless...surfers.
